Café Thijssen

Thijssen is a lively neighbourhood cafe in the beautiful Jordaan area. Whether you come to have a lunch or a drink, whether you are with friends, colleagues or family, everyone is welcome at Café Thijssen. Beside (Dutch and foreign) tourists, the café is well visited by local residents and people from all over Amsterdam, of which they are quite proud of at Café Thijssen!

Historical location

As long as people remember various cafes have been located on the spot of this pub: Once coffee house Mambo and Café het Generaaltje were located inside, where customers could sleep upstairs after visiting and have had drunk too much. Since 1990, the café has been completely renovated and given a new name, borrowed from the Amsterdam writer and teacher Theo Thijssen, a well-known figure in the Jordaan, which also houses a museum called the Theo Thijssen Museum. There is a beautiful statue of Theo Thijssen (Hans Bayens, 1979) in front of the cafe, on the corner of the Lindengracht and Brouwersgracht, and a small museum in the Jordaan is entirely devoted to this Amsterdam personality.

Quiz Nights, parties and Ajax

In Café Thijssen various activities take place. Beside the occasional silent discos and jazz nights, Ajax matches are broadcast on a big screen. And then there is the weekly Quiz Night, in which several teams compete against each other in 8 rounds for the win: a magnum size Big Chouffe or a beer package. The questions are asked in both English and Dutch, so everyone can join.

The cafe does not have an evening menu, but it does have a nice menu for breakfast, lunch, coffee and drinks.
